What Happens in a Kids Yoga Class?
If you’ve never seen a kids yoga class before, it’s completely normal to feel unsure. Many parents ask things like:
“What exactly do the kids do?”
“Is it like adults yoga”
“Will my child even enjoy it?”
So here’s a simple breakdown of what actually happens in a typical class at Kids Yo Studio.
When children first arrive, we don’t rush straight into movement. We start by helping them settle in. This is important because many kids come from a full day of school or activities. We usually begin with a simple check-in, where children can recognise how they are feeling that day.
After that, we move into warm-ups, but not in a strict exercise way. In a typical kids yoga ages 3-6years old class, everything is taught through storytelling and imagination. For example, children might pretend to be animals, travel through space, or climb imaginary mountains while doing movements. This makes the class fun while still building strength and coordination and as they grow older our classes focus on other aspect of yoga and life skills.
Next, we introduce simple breathing exercises. We keep it very easy for children to understand. For example, “balloon breathing” or “blowing a candle breath”. These techniques help children learn how to calm themselves down when they feel overwhelmed or frustrated.
One of the most powerful parts of the class is focus games. These are short activities where children practice listening, waiting, and controlling their movements. It may look like play, but it actually trains attention and self-control in a very natural way.
At the end of class, we guide children into a short relaxation. This is where their body slows down and their mind becomes calm again. Some children rest quietly, some even fall asleep—and that is completely normal.
Over time, parents usually notice changes at home. Children become a little calmer, more aware of their emotions, and easier to communicate with.
The most important thing to understand is this: kids yoga is not about making children perfect. It’s about helping them understand themselves better.
