Is Kids Yoga Really Worth It?

6 Benefits for Your Child’s Focus, Confidence & Emotional Growth

If you’re a parent in Malaysia, you probably already have a packed schedule of school, tuition, homework, and extracurricular activities for your child. So when you hear “kids yoga”, the first question is usually:

Is this actually useful… or just another activity?

The honest answer is—kids yoga is not about flexibility or doing perfect poses. It’s about helping children learn how to manage their body, attention, and emotions in a world that moves very fast.

And that’s something many kids today really struggle with.

  1. One of the biggest benefits parents notice is improved focus. Children today are constantly surrounded by screens, noise, and stimulation. In kids yoga, we use simple breathing and movement patterns that help train their attention span in a gentle way. Over time, many children become more settled and able to focus better in school.

  2. Another important benefit is emotional regulation. Instead of telling children to “stop crying” or “calm down”, we teach them simple tools like breathing and awareness. So they slowly learn how to understand their emotions and settle themselves without being overwhelmed.

  3. Physically, kids yoga helps improve coordination, balance, and body awareness. These are important foundations not just for other sports, but also for everyday confidence in how they move and carry themselves.

  4. Parents also often notice a boost in confidence. Because there is no competition in class, children are encouraged to try at their own pace. This helps them feel safe to express themselves without fear of being compared to others.

  5. We also see improvements in social behaviour. Children learn to listen to their bodies and other; and also respect space in a group setting. These are simple but important life skills.

  6. And finally, one of the most meaningful outcomes is emotional awareness. Children start to understand how they feel, instead of just reacting to emotions. So is kids yoga worth it?

If you are looking for just physical activity, there are many options out there.
But if you want your child to be more focused, calmer, and emotionally balanced in daily life—then yes, it can make a real difference.

If you’d like to see how it actually works in real life, we also open selected sessions for class observation at Kids Yo Studio @HotYo.Studio located in Decathlon KLCC.

What Happens in a Kids Yoga Class?

If you’ve never seen a kids yoga class before, it’s completely normal to feel unsure. Many parents ask things like:

“What exactly do the kids do?”
“Is it like adults yoga”
“Will my child even enjoy it?”

So here’s a simple breakdown of what actually happens in a typical class at Kids Yo Studio.

When children first arrive, we don’t rush straight into movement. We start by helping them settle in. This is important because many kids come from a full day of school or activities. We usually begin with a simple check-in, where children can recognise how they are feeling that day.

After that, we move into warm-ups, but not in a strict exercise way. In a typical kids yoga ages 3-6years old class, everything is taught through storytelling and imagination. For example, children might pretend to be animals, travel through space, or climb imaginary mountains while doing movements. This makes the class fun while still building strength and coordination and as they grow older our classes focus on other aspect of yoga and life skills.

Next, we introduce simple breathing exercises. We keep it very easy for children to understand. For example, “balloon breathing” or “blowing a candle breath”. These techniques help children learn how to calm themselves down when they feel overwhelmed or frustrated.

One of the most powerful parts of the class is focus games. These are short activities where children practice listening, waiting, and controlling their movements. It may look like play, but it actually trains attention and self-control in a very natural way.

At the end of class, we guide children into a short relaxation. This is where their body slows down and their mind becomes calm again. Some children rest quietly, some even fall asleep—and that is completely normal.

Over time, parents usually notice changes at home. Children become a little calmer, more aware of their emotions, and easier to communicate with.

The most important thing to understand is this: kids yoga is not about making children perfect. It’s about helping them understand themselves better.

How to Become a Certified Kids Yoga Teacher

A lot of people think you need to be very flexible, experienced, or already a yoga teacher to start teaching kids yoga. That’s not true. In fact, many of our trainees come from completely different backgrounds—teachers, mothers, yoga instructors/lover, fitness instructors, or people looking for a meaningful career add/change.

What matters most is not how advanced your yoga is, it’s more about your ability to connect with children. Kids yoga is very different from adult yoga. You are not teaching perfect poses. You are guiding children through movement, imagination, and simple mindfulness in a way they can understand.

In our training, we start with the basics. You learn how children think, how they respond to instruction, and how to structure a class in a way that keeps them engaged. We also focus a lot on classroom management. This is usually the biggest concern for beginners. You will learn how to guide high-energy children, how to bring them back to focus, and how to manage group dynamics without stress.

Another important part is creative teaching. Instead of repeating the same routine, you learn how to build themed classes using stories, games, and imagination. This is what makes kids yoga fun and effective. You will also learn how to support emotional development in children. Many kids today face challenges like stress, anxiety, or difficulty focusing. As a teacher, you learn how to support them in a safe, simple and fun way.

Most importantly, you don’t just learn theory. You get real practice through observation, assistance, guided teaching, co-teaching until you are confident to teach your own class. In other words, we help you build confidence step by step. After certification, many of our graduates in Malaysia go on to teach in schools, yoga studios, or even start their own classes. Some integrate it into their existing careers as teachers.

If you’re thinking, “I don’t know if I’m ready yet,” that’s completely normal. Most people start there. That’s why we always suggest starting with understanding the training first before making any decision. You can always reach out to us via WhatsApp or request more information about the Kids Yo Teacher Training to see if it fits your path.
